Big Society

We understand that our volunteers have already been playing their part in the Big Society by helping Councils keep paths open and accessible. However, in order to conduct this work our volunteers require the guidence and support of qualified Rights of Way Officers.

Also across England and Wales the level of work completed by volunteers varies from one Council authority to another. We want to see all councils making the best use of volunteers.

The 'Silver Slashers' have been clearing paths in Anglesey for five years. You can read about their work here.

Are you already conducting practical path work, or is your council unwilling to let you undertake this type of work? Contribute to our forum here to share your views with others.

Guidance for pratical path work

Dead End The BTCV have published a manual entitled 'Footpaths a Practical Handbook', if you want to start this type of work and are a Ramblers volunteer please email Ed Wilson, Volunteer Support and Development Officer at ed.wilson@ramblers.org.uk, for a copy. Details of the book can be found here.

Dead End All Ramblers volunteers conducting practical path work are covered under our insurance policy, a copy of which can be downloaded here. However, to be covered you need to email walking.environment@ramblers.org.uk with your name, date of birth, group details, membership number, postcode and telephone number.

Dead End Some Practical Path working parties choose to raise money so that they can buy their own tools and equipment. If you would like help with funding applications, or any information on raising money people contact the Fundraising team at fundraising@ramblers.org.uk.

If you have any other questions relating to pratical path work, and would like advise and support to set up your own working party please email Ed Wilson, Volunteer Support and Development Officer at ed.wilson@ramblers.org.uk.
