Send an email to thank the council responsible for maintaining the paths you enjoy using.
Severe governments cuts will put many well-loved scenic routes and convenient shortcuts at risk, as councils lose resources to maintain footpaths.
Under law local authorities (county and district councils) have to look after public footpaths in their urban or rural locality, however it is likely that the upcoming budget cuts will see many paths falling into disrepair as councils lose the ability to deal with problems such as obstructions such as developments, overgrowth, barbed wire, rubbish and poor street lighting.
It is of vital importance that walkers show how highly they value the paths they use and the council which looks after them:
Please download a template email here to send to councils. You should send copies to the Rights of Way department and your councillor so that they can use the letters as evidence of public support for their work.
Find your Rights of Way department here. You will also be able to find your councillor by using the website address listed on this page. Most councils websites list their councillors contact details.
