Managing an Area or Group

What it involves

All Areas and Groups are managed by a committee of key volunteers. Volunteers who make up the committee are elected into post by members each year at the AGM. This team of "management" volunteers take overall responsibility for all the processes involved in running a successful and thriving Area or Group.

The committee meets regularly throughout the year and works democratically to decide on policies and the strategic direction of the Area or Group. The committee works very closely with the other volunteers who support the Area or Group through campaigning activities or projects like producing a newsletter or managing a website.

The key committee roles

  • The Chair facilitates the committee meetings, ensuring they run smoothly and are democratic and productive. Chairs also take a key role in decision-making. Most Chairs work very closely with the Secretary.
  • The Secretary acts as the central point of contact for the Group or Area with Ramblers central cffice. Secretaries play a key role in disseminating information - a great role for getting an overview of what's happening across the whole organisation!
  • The Treasurer records income and expenditure, administers the Group or Area bank account, arranges for the payment of bills and processes volunteer expenses.
  • The Membership Secretary acts as a point of contact for new members. They welcome new members and provide them with information on Aera or Group activities. Membership Secretaries also analyse the membership figures and many play an active part in recruiting new members.
