In 2012 the Ramblers’ Get Walking Keep Walking project will be recognised by the World Health Organisation as a leading example of physical activity promotion. This is an accolade that the whole organisation should be proud of, and is testament to the volunteers and staff who have been involved since 2007, when it started as a pilot in Birmingham before being extended to other locations in England.
Did you know?
- 12,000 people have taken part in face to face programmes since 2008
- A year after taking part in programmes, people are still walking more
- Staff have supported and trained hundreds of volunteers to deliver the 12 week programmes
- Volunteers have developed over 1,500 walking routes, and kick-started a national route development project (to be launched in the spring)
- A new Group has been created in Manchester & Salford, which has started campaigning on footpath issues as well as leading walks
Looking forward – Get Walking Keep Walking
In 2012 Get Walking Keep Walking will be delivered in Birmingham, County Durham, Leicester & Swindon. In locations like these strong partnerships are developing between Ramblers Groups, staff and Local Authorities – and there’s potential for many more.
To date Get Walking Keep Walking has been funded through support by the Big Lottery and other partners. We are moving to a local funding model as Local Authorities increasingly appreciate the contribution that walking can play in tackling poor health and social isolation. Similar projects are being developed by the Ramblers in Scotland and Wales to extend these programmes to a wider range of communities.
