Footpath Secretary

As a Footpath Secretary you will contribute to the development of opportunities and facilities for walking in your Area by working to protect and enhance the local rights of way network. These pages are designed to support you to undertake this role.

Support and Resources

We provide a number of resources for those undertaking the role of Area or Group Footpath Secretary as well as those who undertake Practical Path Work. Central Office can also provide a large amount of support for all these areas of work. To take advantage of this please gets in touch with the Walking Environment Team.

The list below outlines the various resources that are available as well as who they are aimed at.

  • Role descriptions for Area Footpath Secretaries and Group Footpath Secretaries - These role descriptions are aimed at those in the role of Footpath Secretary and the types of activities that are involved in the role.

  • Ramblers rights of way volunteers' handbook - A resource aimed at all new rights of way volunteers. The resource outlines the basics of rights of way law, Rights of Way management as well as key policies that may come in helpful when undertaking your role.

  • Factsheet Library - These factsheets are aimed at all rights of way volunteers. They give support in a number of different areas including guidance on how the law affects path work, responding to consultation and encouraging volunteering.   • The BTCV Guide, 'Footpaths - a practical handbook,'- This is a free resource aimed at those who undertake or coordinate practical path work at Group or Area level.

  • Insurance Information - Ramblers provide insurance for those undertaking practical path works. This information is aimed at those who undertake practical path work.

  • Paths for People - A guide to public paths for members of parish, town and community councils

  • Knowledge Portal - A one stop shop for all queries about rights of way, for volunteers undertaking a rights of way role.

  • Footpath Worker - This is a Journal detailing the latest development in rights of way law and policy. It is aimed at those who volunteer in a rights of way role such as Footpath Secretary, Practical Path worker or Practical Path work Coordinator. The recent editions can be downloaded below:
