The Isle of Wight Ramblers have joined forces with the West Wight Landscape Partnership (WWLP) to produce a new 10 mile trail which will be suitable for all walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. The route will pass through heritage sites such as disused railway lines and the 1970 Pop Festival location, as well as following the important Yar estuary. It will involve the creation of some new rights of way.

The West Wight is a remarkable landscape that is said to encapsulate the whole of Southern England, containing heathland, downland, farmland and magnificent seascapes. It also contains world class geology, internationally important flora and fauna and a record of human habitation stretching back more than 425,000 years.

The West Wight Landscape Partnership was formed in 2004 to identify new opportunities for local people and visitors to learn about, enjoy and celebrate the historic character of the West Wight’s landscape and participate in its conservation. In 2008 WWLP secured a Lottery Fund award of £1.7million towards the cost of delivering a themed programme of activities.

David Howarth, Area Chairman said “This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved with the local community in delivering a new trail that will be accessible by most people. The West Wight is rich in heritage – Tennyson, Marconi, Robert Hooke lived and worked here. The landscape is nationally important.”

The Isle of Wight Ramblers are also hoping to secure funding to improve access along the western side of the Yar estuary. This would create a circular route around the estuary suitable for all footpath users.
