Footpath Activities Log 2009/10

Record number of path successes reported in May (News - 3 June 2010.)

The Ramblers, through the work of its dedicated volunteers, is helping to keep the Rights of Way Network in England and Wales open for all to use and enjoy. Over our 75th year we are keeping a log of all successes reported to us by volunteers. In May alone we had over 40 successes reported to us. That's more than one success every day!

However, special mention must go to Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire Ramblers who over the last 6 months have had over 25 successes. Basil Merry, Footpath Secretary, got in touch to tell us about these successes. He has said that so far volunteers in the Group have given over 25 days and successes have been achieved through campaigning, practical footpath work and building a strong relationship with Derbyshire County Council and working with land owners.

The Group has seen over 25 successes over the last few months and this has been because of the dedicated work of local Ramblers volunteers and their strong ongoing relationship with the local authority.

Over a 6 month period the group have put in 25 volunteer days and had success through both practical work and campaigning. These successes include:

• Paths and board walks cleared of leaves and debris.
• Major cutting back of overhanging vegetation.
• Signposts and Waymarks installed.
• Gates, bridges and stiles repaired and installed.
• Ploughing and cropping offences reported to the council by individual members.
• Removal of fallen trees.
• Path surveys carried out for the council.
• Drainage, repair and renovation work to paths.

Work like this is going on across England and Wales, and the Ramblers would like to publicise it. To tell us about your footpath successes and share your experiences you can e-mail us or fill in the Online success form.
