Promoting walking: an overview
Walking projects
| We're working with councils, community groups and the health service to find innovative ways of getting people walking regularly, especially people from deprived inner city areas who aren't already active. Projects like Get Walking Keep Walking support independent walking as part of a healthy lifestyle. |
|
Scotland We're helping to set up new groups aimed at people who now want to move on from health walks and other beginners' projects, and supporting existing volunteers to provide short easy walks. We're also looking at ways to promote walking through the 2012 Olympics and 2014 Commonwealth Games
Wales
 | Our Cerrig Camu/Stepping Stones project, run in conjunction with Walking the way to Health, provides easy, friendly walks to fill the gap between very short health walks and more challenging rural walks. We've also promoting 30 minute walks for health at major events like the Eisteddfod. |
Information and promotion
We are Britain's leading provider of information about walking and walking opportunities.
Our comprehensive online information includes a First steps section aimed at people new to walking.
Policy and research
Our promoting walking strategy aims to halt and ultimately to reverse the decline in overall walking.
Through policy and research, lobbying and awareness raising, we aim to persuade funders, local authorities, the health service and government departments to commit more resources to creating a more civilised and liveable Britain where more people choose to walk.
