Promoting walking: an overview

Walking projects

England

We're working with councils, community groups and the health service to find innovative ways of getting people walking regularly, especially people from deprived inner city areas who aren't already active. Projects like Get Walking Keep Walking support independent walking as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Get Walking Day is on 30 May every year -- 30/5, to remind people they should be walking at least 30 minutes a day five days a week. We are working with a wide variety of partners to build this into a major national awareness day for walking.

Many Ramblers Groups offer easy walks run by local volunteers and walks aimed at people with disabilities such as visually impaired walkers.

Wales

Information and promotion

Our comprehensive online information includes a First steps section aimed at people new to walking.

Policy and research

Our promoting walking strategy aims to halt and ultimately to reverse the decline in overall walking.

Through policy and research, lobbying and awareness raising, we aim to persuade funders, local authorities, the health service and government departments to commit more resources to creating a more civilised and liveable Britain where more people choose to walk.
