Deaf and hard of hearing people

Everyone can enjoy the outdoors, no matter their ability. However the outdoor environment can present a few challenges if you are deaf or hard of hearing. Whilst you will still be able to enjoy the same walks and the same benefits as other walkers, it’s worth considering the following tips.

  • Choose well-signed or otherwise easy to follow routes, or make sure of your navigation skills.
  • Take special care when using road and rail crossings with poor visibility.
  • Be aware that if you get lost you may have to communicate with hearing people.
  • If you are walking in a group which includes hearing people, remember that the leader may issue instructions verbally.
