Great news for long-distance walkers

In previous editions of hike we asked what your favourite long distance walk was. We’ve had answers ranging from the Cotswold Way and the Herriot-Way, to the Suffolk Coastal Path and Offa's Dyke.

Now we have great news about a new long-distance walk! The Great Stones Way follows the Ridgeway path, along the whole length of the chalk downs of Southern England (from Norfolk to Dorset). The route isn’t yet quite ready but a section has already been opened up, called the Plain & Avon Walk.

The 14-mile route runs from Casterley Camp on the Salisbury Plain to Stonehenge, passing through the Avon Valley and some fantastic pre-historic sites. Created by the Friends of the Ridgeway, this is a great opportunity to test out part of the Great Stones Way. Don’t forget to look out for a feature on the Great Stones Way in the next edition of Walk Magazine.

There’s also fantastic news from South Norfolk. Thanks to a donation from the Southern Norfolk Ramblers Group and a grant from Waveney Local Action Group the Boudicca Way Project has rejuvenated a footpath through a beautiful - yet relatively unknown - part of the English countryside.

With new signposts and waymarks, the Boudicca Way runs for approximately 36 miles. It starts and finishes at mainline train stations, so it’s easy to get to as well as being environmentally friendly! It’s a beautiful part of the world, with plenty of opportunities for bird watching as well as other outdoor activities, all while making the most of the wonderful scenery and wildlife.

Have you walked the Plain & Avon Walk or the Boudicca Way? Or are you planning to walk any other long-distance walks over the coming month? Let us know!
