Telecom Masts

In the last 10 years there has been a rapid expansion of mobile phone use which has lead to an increase in the number of telecom masts needed to cope with demands of the different network operators.

Concern has grown about the visual impact of these masts which are often sited in prominent locations in areas of beautiful countryside.

The Ramblers' Association has expressed concern at the growing proliferation of masts and has been campaigning locally and nationally to ensure that planning legislation ensures that developers are required to consult with communities affected by any telecom mast proposal and consideration is given to ways of minimising the impact of masts on the landscape. The RA believes that it is important for developers to carefully examine the visual impacts of masts before sites are chosen and high priority should be given to mast sharing and camouflaging in areas of countryside sensitive to visual impacts.

Local RA volunteers have been very active in opposing masts being built in areas where people feel that seeing masts would detract from their enjoyment of the countryside.
