Way to Go

In October 2004 the government published a new White Paper on transport called 'The Future of Transport'. This has replaced the previous transport White Paper published in 2000. Way to Go campaigned to give the public a voice as there was no official consultation. The campaign took the imagination of lots of our members and we would like to thank everyone for their support.

The Ramblers' Association campaigned on two manifesto points:

  • Streets, lanes and paths in good condition and pleasant for walking.
  • Services and facilities close to people so they don't need to drive.

We were pleased to see that the Department for Transport has listened to some of our campaign and recognises that in order to increase walking the quality of the walking environment has to be reassuring and attractive.

There was more good news for the Ramblers' Association as the government called for more work with voluntary organisations to increase walking and develop good ideas. We hope this means they will continue to listen to our campaigns for more walking promotion. Unfortunately they also shied away from setting any targets or talking about funding.

There will be discussions taking place soon about how the Way to Go campaign moves forward and we will update this website with more actions soon.
