On the 22nd September each year people around Europe take action to make parts of their towns, cities and villages car free. It started in Bath in 1995 when, as part of a green transport week the local authority closed down part of the town to cars and opened it to people. Last year 14 out of the 15 EU member states took part, which just goes to show how popular it is!
The Ramblers' Association has been taking part for the last few years. As part of 'Welcome to Walking Week' we have been asking local volunteers to organise walks that are accessible by public transport and it is growing: in 2001 there were 22 walks organised, 2002 saw 150 and this has been matched over the last two years.
Car Free Walking is an essential part of the Ramblers' work. Not only is it far more environmentally friendly, it is also much more socially inclusive. Our Areas and Groups are all working to increase the number of walks they organise which can be reached without a car, and In Town Without My Car Day is an ideal opportunity for you to get involved. Why not go on one of the walks we've organised and do your bit for the day while enjoying the freedom of not having to find a parking space.
The 22nd September is an ideal opportunity for you to reclaim your streets for families and children. Lots of towns and cities have street parties, bands and colourful displays. There are lot of other ideas from organisations on our contacts and links section.
