Roads and car use: how you can help

Have a look at transport in your local area. Does it place a strong emphasis on pedestrians? If you think there are problems with junctions or busy crossings, try and persuade a local journalist to walk round with a group of local people. Try and include people who often have the most difficulties, such as parents with small children, older people or people with mobility problems.

The Ramblers' Association is running a "Safe to Cross" campaign, trying to persuade local authorities to provide safer crossings when rights of way are severed by busy roads. They are a compiling a register of dangerous crossings which you can get more information on.

Have a think about your own transport use. Are there journeys you currently make by car that could be made on foot, or by public transport? If you drive to the gym, how about cycling there and increasing your exercise?

You can also write to your MP on any issue. MPs take letters from constituents very seriously. A letter writing campaign organised by constituents can be very powerful, this becomes even stronger if the letters are individual rather than a standard letter. If you would like help and advice on which key points you should include in the letter, you can contact the Countryside Campaigns team at the Ramblers' Association.
