Saturday, 23 June 2018 (Group: Capital Walkers)
Start time 10:05
22 miles / 35.4 km
Travel: Take the 09:00 from Paddington arrives Reading at 09:25 (the train goes to Weston-super-Mare). Buy a return from Paddington to Reading. We then take the X40 bus at 09:45 from Reading, Station Road stop SB to Cane End (20 minute journey, cost £2.70 each). Bus stop SB is due South across the plaza from the Southern exit of the station. The leader will meet you at this bus stop. At Henley, you'll need to buy a single to Twyford (we'll aim for the 19:35 train). Twyford trains to Paddington are fairly frequent (every 10-15 mins) & seem to take about 45 minutes.
We walk directly into the heart of the Chilterns. Its a stunning part of the country, with some big hills, stunning views and plenty of amazing wildlife. We visit Warburg Nature Reserve, Stonor Deer Park, 250 deer around an 850 year old private manor house, and at mile *11* stop at Turville Heath for Lunch (at The Barn Cafe, hot & cold food & hot drinks) with toilet stop: http://www.thebarnatturvilleheath.com/.
So no need for packed lunch (unless you want to). Lunch stop will probably be about 13:30. If you want lunch at The Barn, please could you email me so I can warn them about possible numbers?
After lunch we visit Turville (location for filming of Vicar of Dibley AND The Windmill from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang). We then pass though Fingest, Frieth & Hambleden. Lots of filming locations & very pretty villages. We cross the Thames via Hambleden lock to The Flower Pot for a well-earned drink. We finish with a final post pub 2.5 mile gentle stroll to Henley - phew!
