The Thursday walk. Picnic lunch. Train to Portchester (£4.90 return). A walk via Portchester Castle, along the coast following the King's Way, up to Fort Nelson, one of five Palmerston Forts built on the summit of Portsdown Hill overlooking the city. Here we will see WAVE: a poignant sculpture of thousands of individual ceramic poppies spilling over the fort walls, marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. Walk back down to the station for the 16.53 or 17.17 train to catch 17.40 or 18.15 Fast Cat home.

This is a ride and stride. A train walk, going to Oxford. The walk follows the Thames path initially, then through some of the college grounds before crossing some of the attractive parks in the town. There is a glimpse of the river Cherwell; and hopefully the pavilion, in the University Parks will be open for a cup of tea. A short walk through a residential area will bring us to the Oxford canal, where those who are weary can take a short cut back to the station (cutting off about 1 mile). For the more intrepid walker we will go on and cross Port Meadow in order to rejoin the Thames path. Please let Peter know if you are going to come and also if you have not got a rail card so that he can arrange a group discount on tickets. In order to get the best of the day please meet at Reading station by 0925.
