A strenuous linear walk of about 19 miles to Southease, along the Seven Sisters, then northwards to Litlington (lunch at Plough & Harrow pub) and Alfriston; thereafter, continuing along the South Downs Way eastwards as far as Southease. (For those who are interested, the option exists of walking a further 3.5 miles into Lewes.) Buy a return ticket to Eastbourne.

Meet BALHAM station (Underground/National Rail), SW12 9SG, 10.30. A linear walk of 5 miles (3 hours) to Wimbledon. Explore a fascinating alternative to the Capital Ring, through the remnants of south London commons and along the Wandle Valley.

Meet MANNINGTREE station, 9.31 (Liverpool St 8.30, Stratford 8.38). Essex is out, Suffolk is in! A delightful 20-mile (or thereabouts) schlep through Constable Country to Bures. We follow the majestic Stour Valley Path, stopping for lunch at Stoke-by-Nayland (two pubs). Some beautiful scenery, lots of rivers, woodland and hills...and some big, big skies! Stations are on different lines but a return ticket to Manningtree should suffice.

Estimated finish time is 6pm but may be later. Oyster pay-as-you-go is valid to Merstham, which is just beyond Zone 6.
