Help us safeguard access to Britain’s coastline for future generations

Access to the coast in other countries

In many European countries, walkers enjoy a legal right of access to the coast.

Freedom to Roam countryside
Just over the border in Scotland, for example, the recent Land Reform Act has provided walkers with a legal right to walk on coastal areas including beaches, foreshore, cliffs.

Other countries, including France, Denmark, Portugal and Sweden provide similar rights for the public.

The Countryside Agency has commissioned research into access in selected European countries. For a summary of this research, please read the papers for the 22nd Meeting of the National Countryside Access Forum
