Walking is Britain’s most popular outdoor recreation with 38 million people walking for pleasure at least once a month and millions more visiting the countryside for a walk every year. One of the most popular destinations is the coast, which is not surprising given the beauty and diversity of this environment. However, there is no general right to walk along beaches and foreshore. Access to the much of the coast of England and Wales is by permission only and in some places, access is denied. A recent ICM poll commissioned by the Ramblers’ Association found that 94% of the public want a legal right to walk along the coast. I believe that people in England and Wales should have a right to walk along the coast, subject to common sense safeguards for wildlife and development. Scotland, Portugal, France, Sweden and Denmark already enjoy such rights. I support the Ramblers Association in its campaign for a legal right of access to the coast, including beaches and foreshore, I would very much like to hear your views on this important subject.
