Access to the coast in other countries

In many European countries, walkers enjoy a legal right of access to the coast.

Freedom to Roam countryside

Just over the border in Scotland, for example, the recent Land Reform Act has provided walkers with a legal right to walk on coastal areas including beaches, foreshore, cliffs.

Other countries, including France, Denmark, Portugal and Sweden provide similar rights for the public.

As part of its Improving access to the English coast report of 2007 Natural England undertook a detailed study of costal access in other parts of Europe. The detailed findings are now available to download from Natural England’s web-site:
