Permissive access and Ministry of Defence land

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CRoW) has opened up 936,000 hectares of mapped mountain, moor, heath, down and Common Land for walkers. Other areas may be open to walkers by permission of the landowner.

We believe that a statutory right of access is always preferable to permissive access, which may be restricted or removed at any time. However, we will where possible work to improve permissive access to gain the best access provision for walkers and the public.

The Ministry of Defence is one of the largest landowners in the U.K. with approximately 160,000 hectares of countryside or undeveloped rural land. The Ramblers Association campaigns to open as much of this land as possible to walkers and the public.
