Ministry of Defence land

The Ministry of Defence is one of the largest landowners in the UK, and approximately 160,000 hectares of its land comprises relatively undeveloped rural land. Of this, approximately 30% is within the boundaries of our National Parks.

It is therefore in the interest of walkers that the Ramblers' Association takes a keen interest in the activities of the Ministry of Defence and Defence Estates, which is the executive agency that actually manages the land.

The MoD has increasingly become more positive towards access and provides a number of promoted routes and areas of managed access on its land. More information on the access it allows on its estate can be found on it its access website.

The RA is calling on the Ministry of Defence:

  • To increase the amount of access available to the Defence Estate as much as possible
  • To improve the quality of the access currently available through effective management on the ground and sufficient advertising of the the access allowed.
  • To stop using our National Parks for military training
If you have encountered any problems whilst out walking connected with military training particularly in National Parks please contact the Ramblers Association by e-mail: freedom@ramblers.org.uk or by post:
