Closures and restrictions

The Countryside and Right of Way Act 2000 (CRoW) allows landowners or others with a legal interest in any access land (tenants, for example, or those who hold sporting rights) to exclude or restrict access for any reason for up to 28 days a year without seeking permission, although closures at weekends and public holidays are to be limited.

Freedom to Roam countryside

In addition to this, the legislation allows further exclusions or restrictions on the grounds of nature and heritage conservation, for the purpose of fire prevention, to avoid danger to the public and for land management reasons.

For more information on were and when restriction can be placed on mapped access land and were you can find out about them please see our brief guide to restrictions on CRoW access land.
