Our plans for the English Coastal Path are in danger of grinding to a halt – and they’ve barely started
Two years ago, thanks to the support of our members, the Ramblers secured the Marine and Coastal Access Act. This groundbreaking legislation opened up the prospect of one continuous walking route along the whole of England’s coast.
A shift in government focus now means this amazing coastal path has dropped to the bottom of the priority list. The planning and design is delayed and there is a lack of commitment from those in power to continue.
The English Coastal Path would be a landmark creation, loved by generations of walkers and breathing new life to our coastal villages and seaside towns. However the coastal path could sink without a trace, before any of us have even set foot on it.
Working to secure the new coastal route
Thanks to Ramblers volunteers, work has started on six stretches of the coast. The Ramblers have played a key part in getting work underway by producing route reports for local authorities and organisations like Natural England – the government’s advisor on the natural environment.
Without our planning and influence in the process, the path would be forced inland to detour around manmade obstacles like holiday parks and golf courses, obscuring the wonderful views.
How you can help
We still have a lot to do and can only do it with your support. We need to train surveying volunteers to continue our reports and make our media campaign work even harder to continue lobbying the government and big decision makers.
We all worked so hard to secure this legislation in the first place it would be heartbreaking to allow this landmark project to slip into obscurity.
