Tax-Efficient Giving - Making Money Go Further
Almost 70% of the population make regular donations to charity, but only a small proportion do so tax-effectively. This means that both donors and charities are missing out on millions of pounds. At the Ramblers' Association, we want to make your money - and ours - go further. Here's how we can do it.
Leave the world a better place
If you leave money to the Ramblers' Association in your will, the value of your legacy will be deducted from your estate before inheritance tax is calculated. Thus, you could help the Ramblers' and reduce your tax liability at the same time. Please visit our legacy section or download our free guide to making or updating your will.

Gift-aid
Using Gift Aid means that for every £10 you donate, the Ramblers' Association can claim an extra £2.81 direct from the Inland Revenue, without costing you a penny. As long as you have completed a simple declaration and you pay enough tax to cover the amount reclaimed, we can claim the back basic income tax which you have already paid on that donation. Please help us by completing the online declaration.
What's more, if you pay income tax at the higher rate, you can use Gift Aid to reduce your tax liability. We would reclaim the standard rate tax, but the saving at the higher rate is yours and will reduce your tax by 23p for every pound donated. Of course, you may wish to forward your rebate to the Ramblers' Association, so that it can be Gift-Aided again. Use our Gift Aid calculator for more information.
Self-assessment donations
Taxpayers can now use their self-assessment forms to instruct the Inland Revenue to redirect to the Ramblers' Association all or some of any rebate they are owed:
- If you want to give all of the repayment, tick box 19A.1, otherwise, specify a maximum amount in box 19A.2
- Enter the Ramblers' Association's unique code RAE34FG in box 19A.3
- Gift Aid this donation by ticking box 19A.4. This means that you can claim further relief in your tax return for next year.
- Your donation will be anonymous unless you allow the Inland Revenue to tell us by ticking box 19A.5
Payroll Giving

Payroll Giving is a tax free way of giving to the Ramblers’ Association.
How does it work?
Normally, when you donate money to a cause, you are giving out of your taxed income but when you choose Payroll Giving, your donation is taken from your pay before tax is deducted. Simply put, the Ramblers' Association would get a bigger donation. Payroll Giving is extremely simple to use - once your donation is set up, you don’t have to do anything except relax in the knowledge that every week or month, as regular as clockwork, the RA will benefit.
| Individual’s pledge to charity (gross) | Cost to individual @ 22% tax (net) | Cost to individual @ £40% tax (net) |
|---|---|---|
| £5 | £3.90 | £3.00 |
| £10 | £7.80 | £6.00 |
| £50 | £39.00 | £30.00 |
To explain another way, if you pay the standard tax rate and you give £12.82 per month, the cost to you is £10!
The benefits to you:
- Your donation costs you less, and the RA receives more at no extra cost to you;
- It's easy to forget about, there's no administration and no hassle;
- It's flexible - if you wish to vary the amount of your donation, stop payments or change any aspect of your gift, simply inform your payroll department and they will amend your details and pass the information on to us;
- It's possible to make your donations anonymous;
How to donate through your payroll:
- Please contact us and we will send you a simple form to complete.
- Alternatively, print out
and complete our Donor Joining Form and return it

Share Giving
Giving shares and securities has long been a good way of unlocking capital and passing it on to good causes. Since April 2000, donations made in this way have been eligible for full personal income tax relief as well as exemption from capital gains tax. This means that any UK taxpayer who owns listed shares, unit trusts or OEICs can donate them to the Ramblers' Association and claim this personal tax relief. A gift of £1000 of listed shares could reduce a basic rate taxpayer's income tax bill by £220 and a higher rate taxpayer's by £400.
The Ramblers' Association is registered charity (number 1093577) and a company limited by guarantee registered in England and Wales (number 4458492)
