Does your bank contribute to climate change?
Or campaign to combat it?
Credit card offers abound these days, and so we must think carefully about who we borrow from.
Of course, the Ramblers don’t team up with just anybody. Our partner stands out from the crowd of High Street banks with their customer-led, ethically driven approach to business. This is why we are proud that the Co-operative Bank are the provider of our supporter credit card. And it’s a partnership they’re proud of too.
When you take out a Ramblers’ credit card, they'll donate £15. When you use it for the first time, we’ll receive another £2.50. And for as long as you continue to use the card, we’ll get generous contributions towards our core work.

The Co-operative Bank operates a strict policy of ethical investing. Their ethical policy (introduced in 1992) is dynamic and developed in consultation with all customers. The commitment to social responsibility that underlies the policy is part of the values that have been passed on through the Co-operative Movement since its creation in 1844.
Today’s sustainability-focused policy contains guidelines on Human Rights, Oppressive Regimes, the Arms Trade, Corporate Responsibility and Global Trade, Genetic Modification, Ecological Impact, Animal Welfare and Social Enterprise.
Also mindful of the issue of consumer debt, the Co-operative Bank has a policy of responsible lending. They are committed to environmental and community projects and regularly donate to charities that customers vote on. This year, as part of their Customers Who Care Campaign they are donating to climate change charities and have joined forces with Friends of the Earth in the campaign to combat climate change, the most serious problem our world faces today.
As a consequence of their ethical policy, the Bank turned away £10 million of business in 2005 alone! One quarter of this related directly to concerns about global climate change. Despite this the bank continues to grow in strength as people join precisely because of these strict ethical principles.
And every time you use the card you will play a role in funding:
- outreach projects, bringing the joys of the countryside to new audiences
- volunteer path clearance work and stile construction
- the RA’s campaign work – 50 local councillors can be contacted with the £15 we receive when you sign up to the Ramblers Credit Card
There are two types of card available. Both offer attractive rates and there are no annual fees.
