Car Free Day:
On 22 September many town centre streets will close to cars and lorries, and open up for people to enjoy walking, cycling, street theatre, live music, dancing, public art and children's play areas.
Car Free Day or “In Town, Without My Car” day allows us to question what our streets are really for, and whether we have got the balance right between the differing and often competing needs of street users. Should high streets be designed to maximise throughput of motor traffic, or should the emphasis be on designing social spaces where people can enjoy leisure activities in relative peace, quiet and safety?
Car Free Day gives us a space to reflect on these issues, and a tantalising glimpse of what our town centre streets could be like with less motor traffic. It is a visionary campaign and a happy invention allowing people to come together and see how much better urban life can be.
