Since April 2012, we've been working with Macmillan Cancer Support to run Walking for Health, England’s network of health walk schemes.
Macmillan’s ambition is to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer and to inspire millions of others to do the same. There is mounting evidence for the benefits of physical activity before, during and after cancer treatment. Macmillan’s Move More campaign has already encouraged thousands of people living with and beyond cancer to become more active, and now, working in partnership with us, they hope to help and support even more people to become physically active through Walking for Health.
“The Ramblers have a fantastic track record of delivering walking programmes for both new and experienced walkers," sayd Ciarán Devane, Chief Executive of Macmillan Cancer Support. "By working with them to deliver Walking for Health, I am confident that we can increase opportunities for people to become more active, whether it is because they have cancer, some other condition, or just want to be healthy. It also bodes well that two strong charities who work well together can bring such complementary skills to bear.”
Whilst Walking for Health will remain open to everyone, the Ramblers and Macmillan hope to encourage more people living with and beyond cancer to take part. Working together at both a national level and on the ground at a local level across England, we intend to support and grow Walking for Health and extend its reach to new audiences.
“Our partnership with Macmillan to deliver Walking for Health is vital to our charitable work to promote walking," says Benedict Southworth, Chief Executive of the Ramblers. "Walking is the easiest and most accessible form of physical activity and can make a real difference to people’s health and well-being. This partnership is an exciting new opportunity to bring the benefits of walking to even more people.”
By working together to deliver Walking for Health, we aim to ensure that everyone will have access to a short, free and friendly health walk within easy reach of where they live, to help them to become and stay more active.
