Description: A circular walk initially walking up beside England’s highest cascade above ground waterfall.
Route: From the roadside parking follow the sign for Cautley Spout and drop down and cross the wooden footbridge over the River Rothay and follow the path round to the left. This track initially runs in the direction of Pickering Gill and Cautley Holme Beck before swing around to the right around Ben End as it starts to slowly rise and makes it way up the valley floor. You will now see Cautley Spout.
Keep following the path until you get to the base of the waterfall. The steep ascent starts off with a grassy slope then climbs into man made steps. Throughout the ascent you will always be approximately 10 to 20 metres away from the waterfall.
At the top we follow the path to cross Swerve Gill and continue slowly climbing following Red Gill Beck and then Force Gill Beck until you get to a stony path from where Bram Rigg Top and the Calf is met. Turn right and follow the path up to the trig point on the Calf. From here (and if it’s a clear day) you will get great panoramic views of the Lakeland Fells and the North Howgills. Head back down to the col and continue onto Bram Rigg Top and then onto Calders.
From here follow the path left and cross the wide expanse of the Great Dummacks until we pick up the path that encircles the top of Cautley Crags. Follow the path around to the end of the Crags before dropping down steeply to Pickering Gill until passing through a gate and crossing a wooden footbridge which enters back onto the outbound path. Follow the path back to the wooden footbridge and back to the start.
