We then walk up onto the downs through the secluded, picturesque village of Telscombe and descend to the Sussex coastline at Saltdean. We return to Lewes Station via Castle Hill National Nature Reserve, hard to believe this tranquil spot is on the edge of Brighton, and pass the white clapperboard windmill at Kingston. Linear to Rowlands Castle. We walk through Peterfield town square and onto Buriton with its picturesque pond sitting in front of the Church of St Mary. After admiring the setting we ascend into The Queen Elizabeth Country Park via the disused chalk pits on the outskirts of the village. Once through the forest we take the Staunton Way across open rolling countryside. The views of the surroundings are stunning. Lunch at Chalton at the 'Red Lion', a 16th century half-timbered inn, or picnic.
