As the year draws to its close and the nights draw in, so the North Downs Way odyssey approaches its end. This penultimate stage takes in mainly agricultural land, and crosses the now defunct East Kent coalfield, before a steady ascent into Shepherdswell.
Travel: Take 8:37 from London St Pancras (8:44 Stratford International), change at Ashford (arr. 9:14, dep. 9:32), arr. Canterbury West 9:50. Can also take direct 8:10 from London Charing Cross. Buy return to Shepherdswell. Pub stop en route and at end of walk. Bring packed lunch.

This walk explores Alice Holt Forest before visiting the remote and beautiful Frensham Common and the Devils Jumps. Walk will include the Atlantic Wall reconstruction used for the D-Day preparation. Please bring a packed lunch, pub at the end.Brisk pace. The last part is on lanes, bring a head torch in case of delays.

Optional Extra: An extra 4 miles following the return to Rainham is available for those who want more - bring a torch if planning to join. This would follow the coast back to Gillingham. Passes 8 metres high 'Horrid Hill'.
