Start time: 18:45
Moderate 5 miles / 8.1 km
Travel: One option is to take the 18:12 train from Waterloo to Hampton Wick (destination Shepperton). This train calls at Vauxhall (18:15), Clapham Junction (18:20) and Wimbledon (18:28). Earlier trains run every 15 minutes but make sure you get a fast one via Wimbledon not a slow one via Richmond! Return trains from Hampton are half-hourly. You can use a Travelcard or Oyster for this walk, the start and end stations are both in Zone 6
We will experience the wildness of Bushy Park at night. The walk will start with a sandy story about a rabbit and then a discussion of deer (likely to be less timid at night) and other wildlife lurking in the dark. Then we will head to the memorial where Eisenhower planned D-Day before going down the Chestnut Avenue (traffic free at night) to the Diana Fountain. From there we will walk along the Lime Avenue beside the Longford River and the water gardens. No loos or cafés at Hampton Wick or on the walk itself but it isn't called “Bushy Park” for nothing. The walk should take around 2 hours and we will aim to end up in a Pub near Hampton Station.
Terrain: Surface paths – trainers or sensible shoes will be fine
Dropout points: may be possible to drop out en route if we are near a bus stop or a station.
