Saturday, 11 November 2017
Start time: 10:00
Moderate 10 miles / 16.1 km
The walk is approximately 10.5 miles and takes place entirely within the confines of the Derwent Valley. From Fairholmes we take the road below Derwent dam to the village of the same name most of which is now submerged. From there we will ascend gradually onto the southern side of Derwent Edge from where, weather permitting, we can enjoy panoramic views across the Derwent Valley and surrounding countryside. We will then cross over Lady Bower Dam and take the track alongside the far side of the reservoir which links into a forest path leading up towards Hope Cross. We then join the Roman Road which connected the Roman fort of Navio to other forts in the region. We will then descend along this historic route to the bridge crossing the river Ashop. The final stage of the walk will take us past Rowlee farm and shortly thereafter onto a woodland path which leads us back to Fairholmes.
