Strenuous 15.5 miles / 24.9 km
This is a long and fast walk as requested by the group to see if we want to stretch ourselves a bit more! The distance is 15.5 miles and we will be looking to maintain an average speed of greater than 3mph excluding the stops. This is not difficult provided we maintain a consistent pace.
The walk begins from the car park near to the Hackpen White Horse on the road north west out of Marlborough called Free’s Avenue, on the way to Broad Hinton and Wootton Bassett, SN4 9NR / SU130747. From there we will walk north east up the Ridgeway to Barbury Castle, before turning south down the gallops to cross the road and then go west at Old Eagle. We will join the Herepath or Green Street towards Avebury, where we will have lunch at the Red Lion PH, a distance of about 10 miles. After lunch we will return east before going north east, crossing the Ridgeway through Wick Down Farm and returning back to the car park. 15.5 miles
