"A fascinating walk following in the footsteps of the Romans along what is arguably the finest section of Hadrian's Wall, between Cawfields Quarry and Housesteads Fort."
This is a linear walk so we will meet and car share (or bus) along the totally straight road to the start and follow the wall route back to the car park.
This walk is unreccied.
Meet point: Housesteads Fort Visitor Centre, NY794684. Pay and display car park.
Meet time: 9.30am to travel to the start point
Description: From Mile Castle Inn cross the road and walk up the minor road to the car park at Cawfields Quarry and follow the path to the left of the lake up to the wall at Milecastle 42. Follow the line of the wall over Cawfield Crags to reach the road at Caw Gap, cross it and pass through a gate then continue to follow the undulating path along the wall (it ascends/descends steeply in a couple of places) up to the summit of Winshield Crags which will hopefully give us panoramic views! Continue east along the wall, heading down hill to Steel Rigg. Cross the road and climb to Peel Crags before continuing to Sycamore Gap. From the gap keep heading east as the wall ups and downs onto Hotbank Crags before finally reaching Housesteads.
Time: 4 hours? (depending on how many stops for photos!)
Please text Katie on 07709318941 by 6pm on Friday if you are coming on this walk (we will be walking in Northumberland on Saturday and staying over so no guarantee of reception).
