"A Grand Day Out"
Tuesday, 10 April 2018
Start time: 10:30
Moderate 6.5 miles / 10.5 km
Our 'Grand Day Out' walk on Tuesday 10 April takes us well outside of our normal walking area and into Deeside and the town of Llangollen. We start with a visit to Castell Dinas Bran, high above the town. This involves a stiff but graduated climb. We then descend to cross fields and follow part of the Clwydian Way to the beautiful ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey. A short climb to the lower slopes of Velvet Hill takes us through woodlands before we drop down again to the Llangollen Canal, to follow the tow path back to the start.
This walk has been timed around the Trawscymru T3 service which starts from Barmouth at 08.25 and continues through Dolgellau (09.00) and Bala (09.35) before arriving at the start point for the walk, Parade Street, Llangollen (SJ215420) at 10.30. We shall aim to return on the 15.50 bus to arrive back in Dolgellau at 17.25 (the next bus departs an hour later). The T3 bus service is operated by Lloyds coaches (01654 702100). They will pick up at any safe place to stop en route. If you have a senior citizens concessionary bus pass please bring it along since it is valid for use on this service.
