Travel: Take the 09:04 from Victoria (Lewisham 09:19, Woolwich Arsenal 09:34), arrives Gravesend at 10:06. Alternatively take the 09:27 from St Pancras International (Stratford International 09:34), arrives Gravesend at 09:48. Buy a return to Gillingham. Return trains from Gillingham are at 28 & 58 minutes past the hour to Victoria (fast via Bromley), 24 & 54 minutes past the hour to Victoria (slow via Woolwich and Lewisham) and 20 & 50 minutes past the hour to St Pancras (High Speed via Stratford).
The first stage of a walk round the Kent Coast. We start at the beginning of the Thames Estuary in London’s first seaside resort which still has a pier and a ferry. Follow the railway inland over the North Downs where it meets the Hoo Peninsula. Descend to the River Medway then climb up past Rochester Castle and Cathedral to the fortifications overlooking Chatham Historic Dockyard. Please bring a packed lunch.
Probable pub at the end. Sunset 16:15. Due to short daylight we’ll have to keep the pace up.
