Passing Mortimer's old church, we cross undulating fields to arrive at Calleva's amphitheatre, then walk between the old walls of the Roman city to Silchester Common for lunch. Please note that the Calleva Arms is closed for refurbishment, so bring a picnic to eat on or around the village green (there are seats, including some inside the bus shelter), Afternoon route through forest (Englefield Estate), passing old church with half-timbered porch near Padworth College, to arrive at Aldermaston near the Avon & Kennet Canal. Possible tea room on canal but if not available, nearby Butt Inn on Station Road will be open. After the recent snow and rain, conditions may be muddy in places through fields and woods. Train: Ealing Broadway 9.05, change at Reading for the 10.03 Basingstoke train (platform 2) arriving Mortimer 10.13, or take fast train from Paddington to Reading at 9.30.
Return trains from Aldermaston at 4.23 or 5,31 arriving Ealing Braodway at 5.49 or 6.49 respectively or change at Reading and Slough for a faster service.
