Start time: 10:30
(Estimated finish time: 16:00)
Leisurely 10.2 miles / 16.4 km
In a replacement to the originally advertised walk (sorry, the Carneddau peaks turned out to be too icy at the moment) we will be taking a leisurely hike along the magnificent Sandstone Trail, starting from the Cheshire Workshops car park in Higher Burwardsley and following the trail south, taking in Bulkeley Hill and views across the Cheshire planes. We then pass over Rawhead and onto Bickerton village, leaving and re-joining the trail to take in Larkton Hill, Maiden Castle and Bickerton Hill. We then return via the lesser-known paths and quiet lanes to the west of Rawhead.
The route may be muddy in places, depending upon rainfall, so good boots and gaiters are advised.
Parking is at the Cheshire Workshops carpark on Barracks Lane, Higher Burwardsley. Follow the brown signs for the Candle Factory. Make sure you leave your car in the small section outside of the main carpark, near the Sandstone Trail sign, where parking is free. There are toilets in the cafe, but these are for customers only, and will not be open until 10am. Therefore, the plan is for those who wish to use the facilities meet for a tea/coffee at 10am, and the walk will start at a slightly later-than-usual 10:30am. There is also a good selection of ice-creams at the cafe for those who don't feel the cold.
Please let me know if you wish to come along.
