Strenuous 12 miles / 19.3 km
Meet Warmley Station car park
A Stroll Down The West End .......... of the Mendips
12 miles – but shorter should you so wish!
Depart Warmley Car Park at 9am. 45 minute drive to Winscombe. Car Park (free) behind ‘The Woodborough’ inn (421576)
Start walk by 10am. Hopefully back in Winscombe by 4pm for tea and cake in the cafe ..... or a ‘lemonade in The Woodborough’
We’ll follow the ‘Strawberry Line’ up to King’s Wood, go through the ancient wood up to the ridge walk along Cross Plain, Wavering Down and Crook Peak, and take in the glorious views of West Mendips, Somerset Levels and Bristol Channel. From there we’ll descend to the village of Loxton where there will be the easy option of strolling along the tarmac lane to the village of Christon and waiting at St Mary’s Church, or taking the climb up Loxton Hill (passing close to Bleadon Hill, the highest point of the western end of the Mendips), before descending to the village of Christon where we can re-join our colleagues. We leave the village, and cross a couple of fields, before the flat route back to Winscombe, through the new Thatcher’s cider orchards, taking in views of the ridge walk you accomplished earlier in the day.
Points of interest: SSSI, stonechats, Exmoor ponies, Frankie Howard, a Mendip port exporting corn and cloth to Portugal, The Loxton Murder, possibly turnips, Thatcher’s cider ...... and far less strenuous than our Swanage epic!!
