This is a circular walk following part of an ancient route walked by medieval pilgrims from Llantarnam Abbey through Cwmbran heading over Myndd Henllys to reach Pen Rhys Abbey near Risca and then on to St Davids in Pembrokeshire.
We start in the public carpark on Oak Street Old Cwmbran, and proceed up St Dials Road This is one of Cwmbran’s ancient throughfares. The road turns into a country lane and on a clear day you can get a glimpse of the Folly Tower in Pontypool with the Skirrid Mountain in Abergavenny further beyond.
We will follow the line of Old St Dials road as it steadily rises through Cwmbran before steeply climbing up the side of Mynydd Mean ( Stone Mountain ) Look out for the Large pudding stones !!
We then make our way across the common , passing 14th Century Llanderfel Farm and the ancient site of Llanderfel Chapel . The route begins to open out and signs of an industrial past become evident in the form of spoil heaps and quarries . Climbing up the bank we will lunch in the largest quarry and hopefully have fantastic views of Cwmbran , the Bristol Channel and Flatholm and Steepholm Islands .This quarry is the top of the 2 mile incline that drops down to the valley floor . This was used as a tram line to transport materials to local brickworks or to be shipped onto the canal.
We will descend down the incline onto the canal , which will take us back into Old Cwmbran village and the Car park .
This is a moderate to energetic 9 mile circular walk .
