Strenuous 15 miles / 24.1 km
A long time ago, on a walks programme far, far away... the first valleys rail ramble set off from Ebbw Vale, sparking a rebellion against the twin tyrranies of circular walkls and car sharing. Now, twelve walks and 120 miles later, this edition the circle and brings us back to where we started.*
As it happens, this is the longest and probably most strenuous so far, at 15 miles long and 3,000ft of ascent. The walk starts at Pontypool & New Inn station, and after a flat start we climb over Mynydd Llanhileth to Six Bells near Abertillery. From there we climb steeply again onto Cefn yr Arail and along the ridge to Mynydd Carn y Cefn before descending to Ebbw Vale town.
The combination of distance, ascent and pace (we do have a train to catch after all...) means you should be confident of your fitness before joining this walk.
*Sadly though, this isn’t the last valleys rail ramble. Despite zero popular demand, there will be two wholly unnecessary sequels before the rebellion is finally crushed.
Cardiff Centrail railway station. Train leaves at 9.21. It’s the Manchester Picadilly train, and usually leaves from platform 1, but please check on the day. Buy yourself a one-way ticket to Pontypool and MEET ON THE PLATFORM.
