Start time: 10:15
(Estimated finish time: 16:45)
Strenuous 12 miles / 19.3 km
Updated details: Having now recced the walk, and the Summer train times now published - updated details are as follows.
We will catch the train from Ribblehead to Dent station (the highest mainland station in England). We then start with a gentle descent , followimg the Dales Way for a short distance towards Dent.
Before reaching Dent (which we shall save for another time), we head towards Deepdale. There is a short steep ascent to the road which we follow towards Whernside.
Given the height we are already at, we then have a relatively short but steep ascent of just over 200 metres to the summit of Whernside, where all being well we should have superb views. We then descend for well deserved refreshments at Ribblehead.
Directions: A number of different routes - if travelling from Lancaster then I suggest the A683 / A687 towards Ingleton, then B6255 to Ribblehead.
From the South, you can follow the road to Lancaster as above. Alternatively, leave the M6 at J31 and take the A59 to Gisburn, then left turn to join A682 to A65, through Long Preston. Head into Settle and take the B6479 through Horton in Ribblesdale to Ribbleshead.
The train fare from Ribblehead is £3.30
Ribblehead Station (there is parking at the station or a short distance away off the road)
