We go past the pier in Herne Bay (our first proper seaside resort) before climbing the “downs” to follow low cliffs through Reculver Country Park. Eventually we reach the Reculver Towers, a prominent landmark on the site of a Roman fort, which guarded the Wantsum Channel separating Kent from the Isle of Thanet when it was still an island. Crossing over to Thanet we follow the sea wall past mussel beds to the start of our first sandy beaches. Bring a packed lunch. Possible coffee stops at Herne Bay and Reculver; possible pub at end.
