Start time: 10:55
Moderate 15 miles / 24.1 km
Travel: Take the 09:55 from Victoria (Clapham Junction 10:02, East Croydon 10:11) arrives Hassocks at 10:50. Buy a return to Brighton. A single from Southwick to Hove will also be needed if doing the shorter walk option. Brighton tickets are valid from Hove.
A walk on the South Downs at a moderate pace but including a few challenging hills. There will be spectacular views as we climb over two ridges then a steep climb to reach the lunch stop at Devil's Dyke. Packed lunch essential as the pub here gets very busy and service is slow. After lunch we head towards the coast via the Sussex Border Path. After about 10 miles in total we will pass Southwick station where there are two trains an hour, change at Hove to get back to Victoria. Alternatively the walk will continue across the lock bridges of Shoreham Port and follow the coast for a further 5 miles to Brighton. This part is flat and on hard surfaces, industrial at first, then along wide promenades.
Terrain: Hilly, grassy tracks. Some shady bridleways may still be muddy. Pavements at the end
Dropout points: Southwick station after 10 miles. Also possible to catch a bus to Brighton from the pub at lunchtime.
