Area name: Kent
Kent is one of the largest of the Ramblers’ areas with over 4000 members and thirteen local groups. The area covers not just the county of Kent but also the unitary authority of Medway and the London boroughs of Bexley and Bromley.
The area is exceptionally well provided with great countryside and coast and around 4500 miles of public rights of way. As well as providing led walks through the groups, the area undertakes a huge amount of work safeguarding public rights of way, both by monitoring the paths and proposed changes and by organising teams of volunteers to clear vegetation and maintain stiles and gates.
We also do a lot to encourage people to get out into the countryside to take advantage of all those miles of footpath, many of which are very quiet despite passing through countryside of outstanding beauty. The variety and historical significance of our coastline is second to none and in 2016 the first Kent section of the England Coast Path opened. To encourage people to use and appreciate the newly-signed and in places newly-created route we have published a guide that you can buy using the instructions on our web site – and support the work we do in the process.
Our groups help local people enjoy walking and protect the places we all love to walk. Most groups organise regular walks led by local experts – a great way to get outside, make new friends and discover how walking boosts your health and happiness.
