Walking in the Vale of White Horse

Welcome to the Vale of White Horse Ramblers group. We cover the historic Vale of White Horse in the south-west corner of Oxfordshire. The market towns of Abingdon, Wantage, and Faringdon are all on our patch.

We are lucky to have some excellent walking nearby: the two National Trails – The Thames Path and The Ridgeway, which form natural boundaries to the Vale; the Uffington White Horse – the oldest in the country; Waylands Smithy – an atmospheric Neolithic long barrow; and many hill forts and other ancient monuments. The southern edge of our area is part of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Join our walking community

Our group helps local people enjoy walking and protect the places we love to walk. We organise regular walks led by competent leaders - a great way to get outside, make new friends and discover how walking boosts your health and happiness.

We walk on most Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays; usually shorter morning walks during the week and longer at weekends. In normal times we also organise linear walks on long distance trails and occasional weekend breaks and social events.

More than half of our walks start close to public transport. Unless stated otherwise, dogs are allowed, but preferably on leads.

You’re very welcome to try walking with us or to get involved in looking after paths and green spaces as part of the county-wide Parish Path Wardens scheme. Or you can get involved in helping to open up new places to explore with our path maintenance team.
