we will walk through woodlands and open pastures, past old farmhouses churches and castles, all the time against the backdrop of the rolling hills of the Weald.
An undulating walk of many views, but without any overly steep ascents, we leave Hartfield past the remains of a motte and bailey castle and cross the Forest Way path before climbing up to Perryhill Farm. We then follow the ridge to Lodgefield Farm before dropping down via Blackham Court to the Medway valley and cross the fields towards Ashurst.
We then briefly join the Wealdway to climb gently up towards Burrs Wood enjoying the spectacular views before following this ridge through Newfield Wood to Top Hill Farm, where we descend to our lunch stop at Groombridge where we can take our picnic lunch on the green with refreshments available at the excellent old pub.
After our picnic lunch we will pass by the historic Groombridge Place on our way out of town and follow the High Weald Landscape Trail back passing through the picturesque Mott's Mill and the landscaped grounds of Buckhurst Park, Withyham Church, and the old tower at Thatchers, entering Hartfield past its church and historic buildings.
