A circular walk from Reeth. Healaugh, Riddings Rigg, Black Hill, Castle Farm, Fremington Edge, Marrick, Grinton Bridge, Reeth Bridge.
From the centre of Reeth the route goes west, along field paths above the Swale, with numerous stiles (some rather awkward to cross), to Healaugh. At the village the route turns north-east crossing through fields to Riddings Rigg Moor and Black Hill before descending to cross Arkle Beck. The path then rises slightly to Castle Farm House, after which it follows the beck downstream for about 1 km (path very muddy on mid-March recce) to Cuckoo Hill. A short, steep ascent (200 m, 660 ft) follows to Fremington Edge. The route descends gradually along the edge on moorland tracks and paths, south-east, to New Close Bank. Continuing downhill, along a quiet lane, our path reaches the hamlet of Marrick, which marks the eastern-most extent of our walk. At this point the route turns west and descends through Steps Wood (very wet and slippery on recce) to Marrick Priory and then back to Reeth via a quiet lane and riverside paths.
