 | There are many great places to walk in and near Birmingham, whether you're on your own or want to walk with a group. You'll find plenty of parks and green spaces, many of them with signed Walk2000 health walks, off-road green routes and canal towpaths, and a walker-friendly city centre rich in culture and heritage. Here are some useful sources of information:
Birmingham City Council
The council is responsible for streets, signing, footpaths and most parks. They have a policy to support walking in the city for transport, health and leisure and produce a range of information including a free Cycling and Walking map showing recommended routes all over the city.
Walk 2000
A long-established health walking project that has so far created almost 40 signed 2km/1.25 mile easy walking routes in parks and open spaces. You can either follow the routes yourself using maps and guides on the website or join led groups that walk many of the routes regularly.
Visit Birmingham
Birmingham's visitor information service has plenty of information that's also useful to people who live in the city, including the colourful Walking in the City pack of city centre trail guides, available for a small charge.
- City tours and trails: more about the Walking in the City trails, links to information about the Jewellery Quarter and Tolkien trails and details of led heritage walks in the city centre.
- Tourism Centre The Rotunda, 150 New Street, Birmingham B2 4PA. Pick up the City trails pack and other information here. Open daily.
Ramblers' Association
Local Ramblers volunteers lead a wide range of walks in and around the city, including shorter walks as well as longer and more challenging countryside walks. The Ramblers website has more information about walking in Birmingham and the West Midlands generally.
